1. Just finished this book. It was beautiful. It’s based on a Russian fairy-tale and I love how it’s so very Russian. The story centers on a childless couple in 1920’s Alaska who create a young girl out of snow and the ensuing years with this slightly feral, but wonderful creature. All of the characters are beautifully imagined with the Alaskan landscape being the most powerful one of all. The sentences are simple and direct but the language is lovely and melancholy and I read essentially the whole book in a day. The original fairy-tale had several endings depending on how it was re-told, and this interpretation stayed true to the mood of its origins. I can’t describe it too much without telling the whole story but it will swallow you up for a while. At least it did to me.
“She wanted to forget melting clumps of snow, flower crowns and fiery kisses, and fairy-tale endings.”
